Since Wednesday, December 16, closed daycare centers and schools are a reality again.  Even though politicians have long tried or hoped to avoid daycare and school closures. For children and young people, this means foregoing their usual daily structure for a longer period of time and reducing social contacts to an absolute minimum. Everyday life becomes dull and boring, boredom and emptiness set in, and fears arise. Initial studies have shown that children and adolescents suffer from the pandemic and sometimes also become seriously mentally ill.

What can you as parents do in this situation? Kika, the joint children’s channel of ARD and ZDF, has compiled a lot of helpful tips and information on this topic under #gemeinsamzuhause, especially for parents of younger children. Under #Zeitfür…Zuversicht, the Kummerkasten team gives concrete advice on how parents can take psychological countermeasures. The varied ideas for games, activities and exercise that Kika has put together under #Zeitfür…Kinder also help to combat boredom at home.

Parents of older children and young people who notice that their children’s psychological stress is increasing can find important information, tips and addresses of established contact points on the website Corona und Du. This website, which was launched in May of this year, is a project of the child and adolescent psychiatry department of LMU Klinikum München in partnership with the Beisheim Foundation. There is also a special section on the website for young people themselves, which aims to help young people get through the crisis in a positive and strengthened way with advice and suggestions.
