Distance teaching is not homeschooling
School of the Future – already today: the Bavarian International School (BIS)
Like a burning glass, the Corona pandemic has revealed what schools have to – and can – do – in times of crisis and general digitalization. Innovative, digitally-affine teachers, technological equipment, IT competence and tailor-made learning concepts are the key factors for successful distance and hybrid teaching. With the experience of Educational Technology since 2002, the Bavarian International School (BIS) has been able to confirm its leadership role and, if necessary, seamlessly switch to “virtual school”.
“There are high hopes for a vaccine as the final response to the Corona pandemic, but schools must have digital DNA independently in order to be able to continuously offer education of the highest quality,” explains Dr. Chrissie Sorenson, school director of the Bavarian International School (BIS) with two campuses in Munich-Schwabing and Haimhausen. Digitally trained teachers, EdTech and IT specialists including helpdesk, a team of trust teachers, mentors and psychologists, and the one-to-one program for students have been standard at BIS for many years.
The 1:1 program means that every child in grades 4-6 gets their own iPad and each student from grades 7-12 gets their own MacBook from school – the digital devices are leased. “On this basis, we are always able to offer a functioning, well-established distance & hybrid learning. Conceptually, it is crucial to develop tailor-made programs for each age and class level, to create a good balance between online and offline, to enable social face-to-face communication, to set conscious pauses and to encourage movement. Structure and rhythm give students support and orientation,” says Dr Chrissie Sorenson.
Personalized education for future game changers
The BIS is a non-profit, private all-day school for children aged three to 18 with Early Childhood Centre (kindergarten) and preschool, primary school (grades 1-5) and upper secondary school (6-12). Around 1,150 students from 61 nations attend the two campuses in Munich-Schwabing and Haimhausen. Personalised, holistic and inspiring learning, digital DNA and innovative spirit, excellent framework conditions and, of course, the international environment characterize the Bavarian International School. In addition to the school language English, German, French, Spanish and Mandarin are taught. The BIS attaches particular importance to integrated psychological counselling programmes, learning and language support as well as extensive extracurricular activities. Each week, more than 400 students take part in around 80 after-school activities. These include sports, art, music, acting, multimedia, design, the European Environmental School project, Model United Nations and the Duke of Edinburgh International Award.
Founded almost 30 years ago, the BIS follows the program of the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). With the IB degree, young people can study at the best universities in Germany and around the world. In 2020, the IB average of the BIS was again well above the global standard (31.1.) at 35.8 points.
Modern, colourful, innovative: BIS City Campus for children from 3 years
Since 2016, the City Campus has also been part of the BIS. Behind the facade of Leopoldstraße 208 is one of the most modern and generous schools in Munich. Around 260 children aged three and over from 34 different nations attend the Early Childhood Center with integrated preschool and primary school (grades 1-5). Highly qualified teachers and excellent framework conditions allow a personalised education with the child as a curious, individual questioner at the centre.
Trust, relationships, cooperation and communication are essential cornerstones of the pedagogical guiding idea. English is the school language, but not a prerequisite for registration. German is also a compulsory subject in primary school. The all-day school offers so-called After School Activities (until 4:30 p.m.) and the After School Care Club (until 6 p.m.). Info & Registration
